This is such a marvelous book showing how the best literature gradually unfolds building layers of complexity that have everything to do with not settling for trite, one dimensional characterization. The stories by the Russian master he includes are such engaging models and by the end you realize Saunders is telling us the best writing is that which humanizes, captures the complexities of people.
